The art of warfare is all about strategies and tactics to outsmart the enemy. As Sun Tzu rightly said, “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” To outsmart the enemy many research and development in various aspects of warfare from surveillance to mobility and combat. These developments eventually seeped in civilian life, making everyday life easy and fashionable.
Did you know? The internet which revolutionized the whole world was born as the Ethernet developed by American Army for speedy and confidential communication. The charm of the corporate fashion, the beloved Blazer(Jacket) and that fancy wristwatch which you are flaunting right now has its roots in Army history.
In the modern era, where warfare has shifted from traditional field to Cyberspace, outer space and Lifeforms it becomes more imminent to have countermeasures for it. When we think of invention and invention coming from a domain of warfare which affects our life, we often neglect the development affecting our health.
Today I will share with you all inventions coming from our defence forces, which are research and developed by various research institutes such as Defence Research and Development Organization. Various of these rolled out devices could be the starting point for the Make in India initiatives in healthcare.
PPE kit made using ‘Submarine Technology’: The DRDO developed a special sealant based on the sealant used in submarines as an alternative to seam sealing tape, because of a shortage of seam sealing tape.
SUMERU-PACS: A portable personal air circulation system weighing 500 grams for keeping PPE comfortable
Enclosure for Intubation Procedure — Aerosol Containment Box: This device helps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 through air droplets from patients to doctors. As per DRDO official “it consists of a transparent cube covering the patient’s head up to the chest, and the two circular ports allow the health worker’s hands to pass and perform the airway procedures. The acrylic/perspex material used here is 50 per cent lighter thermoplastic compared to glass, making it easy to handle”
Obstacle Climbing Chair: A rehabilitation device, particularly in paraplegia, as it provides freedom of mobility to patients with the waist down paralysis.
Lightweight Foldable Stretcher: A foldable stretcher made of composite alloy and special fabric weighing 6.6kg. It is suitable for every terrain and can be carried as a backpack.
Mechanical Hand Dynamometer: A apparatus based on compressed air technology to assess the handgrip/muscle power of the hand. The data is stored in the computer and easily retrieved, as the device is computer connected. This device can be used as a physiotherapy device
ITAD Devices: Anukool I & II are devices for Inhalation Therapy for Alveolar Deposition(ITAD). These are meant for assisting the treatment of pulmonary hypertension (which causes or complicates acute mountain sickness, high altitude pulmonary oedema and hypoxia hypoxemia), bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive airway disease and interstitial lung disease. Anukool I am indicated in mildly breathless patients, while Anukool II is for severely breathless or unconscious patients.
RF Coils for MRI Imaging: The signal to background noise and spatial resolution determines the image quality, which depends on the type of RF coil used..DRDO has developed RF coils for the thyroid and the breast keeping in view the anthropometric factors of the Indian population.
Multi Insect Repellent Cream and Spray (DEPA): N, N-Diethyl-2 phenyl acetamide (DEPA) a multi-insect repellent compound, which is cosmetic friendly having antibacterial properties and nourishes the skin. It keeps insects away for 8 to 10 h with a single application. The spray formulation is easy to apply on fabric, curtains etc. and keeps away from painful bites of blood-sucking insects.
Meat testing Kit: The kit to test microbiologically unsound meat. The test kit contains the components like mini cutter, forceps, and the glass tube with screw cap along with the test strips.
Minimally Processed Fruits & Vegetables: The process developed is based on stabilization of precut vegetables in the packaged form without thermal pretreatment which renders fresh-like quality to the products. The products, as a result of inbuilt ability to withstand ambient temperatures and offer marketing flexibility under varied conditions at the retail outlets.
Tender coconut water: An innovative state-of-the-art technology to preserve and stabilize tender coconut water in flexible polymeric pouches and aluminium cans has been developed. The product has a shelf life of 6 months in the laminate pouch and aluminium cans under ambient conditions. The shelf life can be further extended by 3 more months under refrigerated storage.
Hurdle Technology for fruit preservation: Fruit preservation by hurdle technology is based on a combination of low levels of various antimicrobial factors (hurdles) acting synergistically resulting in shelf-stable high moisture, fresh-like products. These high moisture fruits retain their fresh appeal and the product remains microbiologically safe and has high acceptance. It is an excellent substitute for canned and/ or dehydrated fruit.
These technologies could not only make treatment more accessible and cheap while maintaining the highest degree of the standard to the underprivileged but also could be harnessed to develop Make in India a profitable initiative.
